Russell Roof Tiles has spent years refining its innovative approach to concrete roofing, but the launch of the Bute3® tile has reinforced its position at the forefront of the industry as the product gains traction through new orders and continued market growth.

Full production of Bute3® started in June 2025, with the independent firm having invested more than £20+ million and five years in design and development of the new product. The design of Bute3® has pushed the boundaries of concrete roof tile manufacturing, which is produced the firm’s new, fully automated, state-of-the-art tile line.

Now over 80 UK developments across the country have used or specified the new product. Bute3® tile has become the firm's fastest growing product, since it revolutionised the market, becoming the first UK manufacturer to launch a thin leading edge tile (Galloway) 25 years ago.

When Bute3® was developed as a thinner, lighter concrete interlocking tile, to retain the quality and durability Russell Roof Tiles is known for, while addressing the growing pressures facing developers, mainly build speed. Its unique triple tile design means it is up to 33 per cent quicker to install than alternative roof tiles offering the traditional Plain Tile aesthetic.

Roofing systems are not just aesthetic choices - they are tied to installation, compliance, and long-term performance, and Bute3® delivers against these multiple challenges. It was designed to provide an alternative to small-format concrete, natural clay, and slate roof coverings, with the strength and technical characteristics of a regular large-format tile.

Its reduced weight means easier handling on site and improved installation efficiency. Contractors have recognised that logistics have become simpler, and installation times have dropped. For developers managing tight build programmes, those marginal gains translated into meaningful cost savings.

At the same time, Russell Roof Tiles has always emphasised consistency and supply reliability - factors that have become more critical. While some manufacturers struggled with long lead times or shortages, Russell Roof Tiles production capabilities and UK-based manufacturing gives housebuilders and developers the confidence that Bute3® can be specified at scale without risk to delivery schedules.

The product’s design contributes to quicker project turnaround times, enabling trades to complete developments at a faster pace. In addition, Bute3® has environmental advantages. Its optimised format allows for more tiles per pallet, reducing the number of deliveries required and improving transport efficiency. This, in turn, lowers carbon emissions associated with transport, supporting more sustainable construction whilst delivering tangible cost and time savings across the build process.

Bute3® ’s triple-tile format allows for greater coverage with only 10.9 tiles required per square metre, significantly reducing the number of tiles needed compared to traditional plain tiles. The product is also suitable for roofs with a pitch as low as 25°(22.5°site dependent), offering flexibility in application while maintaining strength and durability.

Within a relatively short period after launch, larger national housebuilders began trialling the product. Technical teams assessed performance, procurement teams analysed cost efficiencies, and site managers evaluated practicality. The results were consistent: Bute3® wasn’t just viable, it was advantageous.

Andrew Hayward, Managing Director at Russell Roof Tiles, said, “The product has now moved from trial to standard specification on several major developments with leading players.
“Bute3® has proven to be a highly versatile, multi-purpose solution, successfully replacing traditional plain tiles across both roofing and vertical applications. Its thin, small-format edge design allows for a faster and more efficient installation process, significantly increasing fixing speeds on site. This enhanced ease of installation not only improves overall build efficiency but also helps reduce labour costs for developers and specifiers.
“We’ve demonstrated that by using pioneering technology and precision engineering, this multifunctional interlocking tile meets the demands of modern construction.
“We continue to develop Bute3® with the recent addition of new colour options, providing a credible alternative to popular clay interlocking and plain tile products on the market. Bute3® has come a long way since we started at the drawing board, but we’re delighted with market response and its performance.”

Bute3® is recognised as a dependable, high-performance concrete tile that meets the evolving needs of modern construction, showing that carefully engineered design can deliver smarter, more efficient materials that deliver both performance and practicality.

For Russell Roof Tiles, Bute3® isn’t just a successful product. It demonstrates that understanding the market, listening to customers, and delivering innovation that makes a measurable difference, showing British innovation at its best.
