VADO, a leading bathroom brassware manufacturer, has revamped its packaging solutions to streamline processes and maximise efficiencies in order to realise a more sustainable solution in the warehouse. During the covid pandemic the implementation of social distancing proved difficult, leading to reduced productivity. Following an internal review, some of the company’s inefficiencies were identified as originating in the packing area.

Working with sustainable packaging provider Protega, staff at VADO redesigned the packing requirements in one area. Bench capacity was increased by 37% and individual stations created to improve focus areas and improve staff output, reduce errors, reduce manual handling injuries and contain all. As a result, fewer mistakes occurred, in fact none was recorded following the installation.

As part of the company’s focus on ESG (environment, social, governance), the packaging is now recycled and recyclable and is FSC certified, and sourced in the UK. The subsequent reduction in carbon emissions is also part of the company’s continuous improvement plan. VADO’s Operations Manager, Alex commented: “The team from Protega were extremely professional – even on the day of the installation we made some changes, and the work was completed over a weekend to ensure no disruption to our operation. Everything ran smoothly before, during and after installation. I am thoroughly impressed.”

Since implementing the Protega solutions, VADO has seen a reduction in paper usage of 27%, which has helped to reduce its environmental impact as well as packaging costs. The ergonomic design has helped to reduce excess activity leading to an annual saving of 527 man hours.

Protega supplies eco-friendly packaging solutions for ecommerce companies and any manufacturer or distributor sending out items on a daily basis, and was an ideal partner for VADO in this project. Peak periods in the bathroom sector are a little unpredictable, and this new design allows VADO scope to be flexible when the orders fluctuate.

With fewer errors in the packing area, the VADO staff have rediscovered a sense of pride. The company is now using less packaging, meeting sustainability and carbon reduction goals, and has a much more professional set up within the warehouse. This will enable the company to easily grow when it secures a larger facility in the future.
