Hauliers – Remember To Register Your Trailers To Travel Post-Brexit.

5 March, 19

With online trailer registration now open, Ian Gallagher , FTA’s Head of Compliance Information at FTA, the business organisation representing the logistics industry, comments:

“From 28 March 2019, UK hauliers will have to register their commercial trailers with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) before towing them into any European country that ratified the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Not all EU countries ratified the Convention – such as Spain, Malta and the Republic of Ireland – so check the full list of applicable countries before registering. FTA strongly advises anyone planning to tow a trailer abroad for commercial use from 28 March 2019 to complete their trailer registration as soon as possible.”

Gallagher continues: “Registrations can be completed online via the gov.uk website and only those operating commercial trailers weighing over 750kg or non-commercial trailers over 3.5 tonnes need apply. Under the rules, drivers will also need to be able present the Trailer Registration Certificate to a foreign authority on request, and clearly display a trailer registration plate (separate from the vehicle towing them), otherwise they may face a fine. While this new rule forms part of the UK’s preparation to leave the EU, it will come into force whether we leave with a withdrawal agreement or without.”

Efficient logistics is vital to keep Britain trading, directly having an impact on more than seven million people employed in the making, selling and moving of goods. With Brexit, new technology and other disruptive forces driving change in the way goods move across borders and through the supply chain, logistics has never been more important to UK plc.  A champion and challenger, FTA speaks to Government with one voice on behalf of the whole sector, with members from the road, rail, sea and air industries, as well as the buyers of freight services such as retailers and manufacturers.
